What are the components of a grant? What information do I need to be successful in getting a grant. We will breakdown each part of a grant proposal and discuss what you need to know to be successful.
 Executive Summary: short description of the request
 Statement of Need: issue to be addressed, supported by data
 Goals and Objectives: specific goals and their desired outcomes
 Evaluation: measuring achievement of your goals
 Other Funding: other current or projected sources of revenue
 Information: mission statement, board of directors, history and track record,
community/population served
 Agency and Project Budgets: statement of project costs, how much needed, how
funds will be spent—and the applicant organization’s annual budget
 The Grantwriter: responsibility for identifying grant prospects and generating
applications

Presenter: Sam Solomon, SCORE Boston Mentor, Grant Writing Expert
Sam Solomon is a counselor with Boston SCORE, a chapter of the nation’s largest
network of volunteer, expert business mentors, dedicated to helping small
businesses and nonprofit organizations develop, grow and achieve their goals.
Following a stint in the US Navy during the Vietnam War, he spent ten years with
the US government, the final four as an appointee of President Jimmy Carter,
focusing on education and civil rights in the Department of Health Education &
Welfare, and served as director of intergovernmental relations in the then-new
Department of Education. He then relocated to Boston to become chief of staff
to the president of the University of Massachusetts system. From 1991-2019, he
was an independent consultant, working with clients in the nonprofit and public
sectors in a range of areas, including organization development, management and
program evaluations; strategic planning; executive transition management;
executive search and executive coaching; and grantwriting and campaign
planning.
Sam holds BA and MA degrees in English (University of South Carolina) and an
MPA in public policy (University of Southern California), and lives in Brookline,
Massachusetts.
