Competitive Edge Sports Performance Center grew out of lifelong athlete Monte Evans’ track and field program. He co-founded Dale City Lightning Track Club in Northern Virginia in 2010 as a track and field running club for boys and girls ages 6 through 18, and the program of 11 athletes has grown to include more than 300 young athletes each year.
“After traveling to the Junior Olympics, I saw athletes compete at an unbelievable level from across the U.S.,” Evans, better known by his athletes as Coach Monte, recalls. “I then realized that we need to be able to train year-round. We began renting middle school gyms during the winter months to work on technique and plyometric strength. As the program grew, having space to train athletes became difficult, which led to opening a training facility.”
Competitive Edge Athletic Performance Center is a multi-sports facility designed to train youth athletes. Athletes attend daily training sessions, clinics and camps that focus on improving speed, technique, strength, stamina, flexibility and stability to enhance athletic performance; sport-specific training is also offered. Competitive Edge’s mission to develop the complete athlete includes educational programs like SAT/ACT prep courses and tutoring.
“Our mentor encouraged us to market to adult/retired athletes that are still active in sports and add programming for them,” Evans explains. “We will launch a Master’s Program in the fall for athletes that are active, competitive and young at heart.”
Competitive Edge Sports Performance Center was selected as one of 102 state winners in the 2017 American Small Business Championship.
Evans sought mentoring from SCORE because he wanted someone who had been in his shoes to guide him through small-business obstacles. He attended several online workshops on revenue streams, angel investors, and health-savings accounts.
Mentor Mark Skolnik has helped Evans brainstorm ideas for expanding Competitive Edge’s programming to include off-peak hours. “Our original programming on youth athletic training is working well, and we wanted ideas on how to maximize our space and earning potential,” he says.
